To Glue or Not To Glue: That is The Question

Tuesday, June 01, 2010

Closing your boxes in finished product packing, is a decision that requires much consideration. There are efficiency issues, material cost concerns, and capital cost for equipment to be considered. The bottom line is getting your product off to market in the best package possible at the lowest cost.

Taping boxes closed can be a slow process if you are simply using hand held tape guns with clear sealing tape. Gluing can be a problem if you have a product that needs to have a totally closed container to prevent contamination.

Desired speed is the primary consideration in choosing a closure method. A high speed automatic gluer can run at speeds up to 30 cases per minute, while a semi-automatic taper is likely to only close 18-20 per minute. Glue is also less costly per case than tape, but machinery costs will eat up those savings and make your payback much longer.

Call us and let us help you determine which method makes the most sense for your operation.
